Ziva (Beste von Grünheide) went to work historical graves on the Oregon trail. The land owner's family settled the land back in the 1800's and knows much of the history there and wants to preserve it. They were there as well as representatives from the Oregon-California Trails Association. Ziva's job was to work a few known but unmarked grave sites, a mass grave site and another suspected mass grave site due to rock inscriptions and formations that are man made. It was fascinating to work the areas and see she had odor and where she would decide it was the strongest and indicate. Very exciting! We worked a larger area so not to direct her to the known and suspected areas, but she pretty much went right to where she should.

UPDATE - April 8, 2011

On April 8th, Ziva had her first SAR find! She made quick work of a search in Owyhee County (Owyhee Mountains, Idaho) where a man's vehicle was found by road graders. He had been missing about 5 days or so and it has snowed several inches after he went missing, so no tracks were visible. Searchers had already been looking but had not been able to find him (lots of land up there to cover). I believe it took Ziva about 20 minutes. She was quite proud of herself! Although not a live recovery, I was glad to bring quick closure to the family.

Beste is Paula's 4th Search and Rescue dog, and recently accredited at the NAPWDA cadaver certification at only 15 months of age!

Paula and Ziva aka Beste Von Grunhiede during their NAPWDA Cadaver certification - she has to pass land, water, rubble, buried, cars and buildings. Here she went all the way under the vehicle to indicate, I was very proud! She passed her certification even though only 15 mo old at the time. We continue with training (as always) and are working towards competing in obedience next year.
