Von Grunheide Police Dogs

The Von Grunheide breeding program started as a result of the need for quality working dogs for Police Service. After years of working for police agencies as a helper/quarry and observing the frustration due to the lack of quality dogs and the availability of dogs, I pursued a goal of breeding dogs for police service.

Von Grunheide Shepherds can be found in Police agencies all over North America and internationally. The Vancouver Police Dept. currently works 17 dogs, over half of which are from the breeding program.

Initially as a young lady, Suzanne raised and trained pups from her program which went into service for the Vancouver Police. In 1995, Suzanne assisted with the foundation of the Vancouver Police Dog Squad puppy program along with Sgt. Wadley and Sgt. Schouten. A group of 6 male German Shepherd puppies were successfully raised and placed into service, 5 of the brothers for the VPD. Over 20 puppies have become operational for the VPD, bringing the total of Police Service dogs put into service through Von Grunheide Shepherds to over 50.

With the continued support of the Vancouver Police Department and other agencies, I strive to breed the best possible quality working dogs from top European lines that produce stable dogs with super work ethic. Emphasis will continue to be on the health of the lines and the natural tracking and hunting abilities of the dogs.

Ateak is seen working at 11 months of age with helper Les Flores. Ateak is a super tempered boy with extremely calm firm grips and over the top ball drive. He is a natural tracker. Ateak's preliminary hip, elbow and spinal views were excellent at 8 months of age.

He also has many other relatives who are police dogs. Bosco loves to come to work and drive around the city meeting people.

Constable Rob Budvarson and PSD Zulu Burnaby R.C.M.P. Zulu graduated from the RCMP training kennels in March of 2005. He is trained in tracking, searching, criminal apprehension and narcotics detection. He is a very energetic dog who loves working and on his days off chasing his hockey ball and swiming. Several of Zulu's brothers are also police service dogs, working for the Vancouver Police and King County Sheriff's Office in Washington State.
